Why Democrats are Evil People, Come on, $10 tax per cigar!

I am convinced now that Democrats really are evil people.

Well, okay, I have the highest respect for good Democrats such as Senators Lieberman and Leahy, two independent-minded Senators who do not follow the "ideological herd" of liberalism (not to mention my good liberal friend Chad Lupkes, an Activist from Seattle).

But other than these few figures, the Democratic Party is just plain evil . . .

Case in point, just today I read in the St. Petersburg Times business section how the pro-Latino cigar industry might face (get this!) a new round of Democratic "tax & spend" taxes on luxury items. Whereas cigarettes would only be taxed $1 per carton (fairly minor and about the cost of inflation anyway!), cigars would be taxed 10,000 % with taxes raised from 5 cents per cigar to the potential of $10 per cigar!

$10 tax per cigar! Oy vei . . . The tax on these alone would literally drive this pro-Latino business out of business . . .

And all for what?

Well, here the cause seems "just," that is in order to fund health care for children who live just above the poverty line. But, $10 per cigar to fund this noble effort?

What are the Democrats doing, smoking crack?

Just imagine the scenes at the local cigar shops. Some innocent Cuban man walks into the cigar humidor, already willing to pay $7 for a Cuesta Rey (the finest of cigars), and then suddenly the sticker would read $17 for the same Cuesta Rey!

Ay Dios mio!

Truly, the Democrats are evil people.

Let's blame Cuban men for all of the nation's problems so says the Democratic Party. Let's focus on universal health care for children while we advocate abortion-as-means-of-birth control.

How about this Democrats?

Let us Republicans now tax YOU. We will go over to Seattle, L.A. and San Francisco and tax your prissy little health food stores and yoga studios. So, you would like a "soy milk/all-natural/protein/chi smoothie?" Well, the Republican Party just passed a health food store tax of $10 per soy milk smoothie . . . that will be $17 for your smoothie please . . . :-) And, yes, the G.O.P. is taxing all of your hypocritical health food, yoga studio, anti-smoking establishments in order to keep you liberals from killing off your own babies whenever y'all get pregnant and want to dispose of your children . . .

Yep, the Democrats are evil.

Vote Rob J King for a cigar-smoking, Latino-business favoring, PRO-LIFE, EVANGELICAL CATHOLIC Nueva Americana . . .

Con carino en Jesucristo,
Rob J King, cigaro-afficianado

What's the bill number? That sounds really extreme.

Found it.

The rates under the proposal are as follows:
• Small cigarettes are taxed at the rate of $50.00 per thousand ($1.00 per pack);
• Large cigarettes are taxed at the rate of $104.9999 per thousand;
• Small cigars are taxed at the rate of $50.00 per thousand (the same rate applied to
small cigarettes);
• Large cigars are taxed at the rate equal to 53.13 percent of the manufacturer’s or
importer’s sales price but not more than $10.00 per cigar;
• Cigarette papers are taxed at the rate of $0.0313 for each 50 papers or fractional part
thereof;
• Cigarette tubes are taxed at the rate of $0.0626 for each 50 tubes or fractional part
thereof;
• Snuff is taxed at the rate of $1.50 per pound, and proportionately at that rate on all
fractional parts of a pound;
• Chewing tobacco is taxed at the rate of $0.50 per pound, and proportionately at that
rate on all fractional parts of a pound;
• Pipe tobacco is taxed at the rate of $2.8126 per pound, and proportionately at that rate
on all fractional parts of a pound; and
• Roll-your-own tobacco is taxed at the rate of $8.9286 per pound, and proportionately
at that rate on all fractional parts of a pound. The rate for roll-your-own tobacco is
intended to approximate the rate for small cigarettes.

I do not smoke, so I have no idea what the measurements mean, nor any idea what the "manufacturer's or importer's sales price" is currently, so you'll need to fill in the blanks.

I appreciate the need for consumption taxes, especially for vices that kill people like processed tobacco is alleged to do, but I'd rather raise taxes on the super-rich up to 50%.

Chad,

You're AWESOME! That's why I have the HIGHEST respect for you. You are a rational thinker who looks at actual #'s, does the hard research, and this is why you graduated with such a HIGH G.P.A. as a result . . .

Regarding this rather "Weird" Cigar-tax anomaly, I am also struck by a $2.81 per pound tax on pipe tobacco. Not as catastrophic as $10 per cigar, BUT still a weird anomaly.

The strange thing is that the rest of the cigarette tax (and also universal health care for children) I ACTUALLY SUPPORT, but the cigar-tax swipe seemed to be way out of line . . .

Source,

Thank you. Yes, I am all for a modest tax on cigarettes (unlike cigars that are "purer," cigarettes basically are like asbetos with additives that wreak havoc on the lungs . . . cigars you don't even inhale anyway).

As a Republican, I am ALL for heavier taxes on the ultra-rich. They can usually "pay" to find all of these tax loopholes anyways, while anyone making under 200K a year is burdened with mortgages, high utility costs, etc.

Rob

Chad,

Woops . . . scratch that. I thought "Source" was a different blogger (like someone you knew in the Federal Government or something . . . you know, like "Deep Throat" :-)

So, Chad, your "Source" speaks for itself . . .
